Provincial Forum at Tarragona

As a provincial capital, Tarragona had a provincial forum for provincial matters and a colonial forum for local or municipal matters. Tarragona's provincial forum arose next to the circus. Sections of the perimeter wall are still visible above ground. Vaulted passageways can be visited in the circus area. The lower passageway displays a statue of a woman found elsewhere (in a 1992 excavation of Parc de la Ciutat, a funerary area of the ancient city). The upper passageway displays a sarcophagus depicting Hyppolytus hunting, likewise found elsewhere (in the sea in 1948). The provincial forum also included the upper sanctuary, in the area currently occupied by the cathedral.
