Description

Augustus had the obelisk transported from Heliopolis, Egypt, and set up in Rome's Circus Maximus in 10 BCE. Pope Sixtus V had the obelisk restored and reerected in the Piazza del Popolo in 1589.

A coin of Trajan represents the circus with the obelisk at the center.
The obelisk also appears on lamps, such as TC 951 at the Antikensammlung der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin
