The Book

How often have you been in one place while imagining another? In the Roman Empire, many places were known by reputation: almost everyone had heard of Rome, even if they had never been there. Other places became known through direct experience: Ambrussum, for example, was a rest stop on the Via Domitia that most people encountered while traveling somewhere else. Destinations in Mind asks how objects brought such different destinations to mind and how craftsmen shaped that experience through innovative designs. Each chapter focuses on a different set of artifacts, all with words and images about particular places.
